He started his pro career back home but only caught people’s attention when he was invited to be a resident Dj at Bungalow 8 NYC. Fresh Nunas alongside co-founder Filipe Narciso formed AM ROOTS an Afro House collective infused with Afrobeat & Ooga Booga origins. His group AM ROOTS has caught the attention of masters like Louie Vega after releasing their first singles with Nulu Records. Afrobeta Bodega starts the new year with a BANG! as none other than my brother from another mother Jose Marquez setting this off right with an amazing set exclusively done for us. Jose Marquez born & raised in Los Angeles, he has quickly risen up as one of LA’s brightest local talents. Growing up around Latin & World Music and immersed early into LA’s underground House Music scene, Jose’s sound can best be described as a fusion of Deep Afro-Latin Soul and Percussive Dance Floor Rhythms.

Jose’s Dj’ing began with the establishment of his own party “INSPIRATION” an event that grew from a simple afterhours gathering of friends to a widely recognized celebration of House music, dance culture & arts in Los Angeles. With past notable guest DJ appearances by the likes of Ron Trent, Boddhi Satva, Marques Wyatt, Abicah Soul and many others, INSPIRATION quickly became another important Los Angles staple for the music we all love.

Jose is currently the resident DJ and founder of Tumbe’ a monthly event in downtown LA dedicated to showcasing various genres of World Music through live performances and dj sets. Jose is also working on producing his own original music/remixes and collaborating with other producers in the studio. Keep an ear out!

On October 15th, in the Ogun state of Nigeria, a legend was born. His name would become Fela Anikulapo Kuti. He would become an adversary of the Nigerian Government, take multiple wives, declare himself President of his own Republic, Fight as a voice of the people, be thrown into prison and tortured all the while, inventing a completely new genre of music called Afrobeat by fusing traditional Yoruba rhythms with Highlife, Jazz, Funk and Soul and recording over 70 Albums in his rich life. During the month of his birth, we celebrate the man, his legacy and his music.

FELA LIVES! is a multi-sensory traveling tribute to the Black President, Born from the desire to keep advancing his message and music and honoring his musical innovation, social consciousness and revolutionary activism. We will be experiencing his music, music he has inspired, moving images of his life and give thanks and offering to him at the traveling and growing shrine. With DJs accompanied by live Afro Percussionists we seek to connect with Fela’s Spirit and call him to celebrate with us.
